Taproom & Events Manager (Downtown Durham)

The Glass Jug is currently seeking a Taproom Manager for our Downtown Durham taproom as our beloved current manager leaves for graduate school. This person will oversee our Downtown Durham taproom as well as our Off-site Events program, which operates primarily out of the Downtown Durham taproom.

The Taproom Manager plays an integral role in building business through revenue monitoring, event and promotion planning, and relationship building. They also manage our team of bartenders and ensure the taproom has all the resources needed to succeed. At this time, we are looking for a great cultural fit. We have a great atmosphere and community at this taproom, and we are looking for someone who can bring their own unique flair to an already thriving community while helping us generate increasing revenue. We are open to varying levels of management experience, though a minimum of 2 years bartending/waiting tables is a firm requirement.

At The Glass Jug Beer Lab, our primary purpose is to Foster Joyful Community. We do that by choosing to:

  • Be mindfully welcoming to all people through friendliness and compassion.

  • Build excitement around our community through enthusiasm and curiosity.

We are passionate about fostering a joyful, diverse community within our own team and in our neighborhoods. If you’re looking for a work environment that is a little different from the norm, where you are willing to practice the self-discipline of placing these priorities in the focus of your day-to-day life, we want to meet you!

DRIVING REVENUE

Our ideal Taproom Manager will take some ownership of taproom and off-site event revenue. A portion of compensation is tied to revenue bonuses. The Taproom Manager will:

  • Find and execute areas and programs for revenue growth.

  • Plan and execute taproom and community events.

  • Work with the marketing team on digital marketing efforts.

  • Plan for and execute other marketing efforts, like off-site events that have marketing value, relationships with other local businesses and organizations, grassroots marketing placements like posters, etc.

MANAGING PEOPLE:

The Taproom Manager is responsible for the performance of our Downtown Durham Taproom and Off-site Events teams. Not only do all shifts need to be covered, but a good Taproom Manager will master team management and delegation. A successful Taproom Manager on our team will:

  • Take ownership of taproom culture. This sometimes means having hard conversations holding everyone accountable for following our company's mission of Fostering a Joyful Community through friendliness, compassion, enthusiasm, and curiosity.

  • Train the team to provide consistently excellent customer experiences and hold the team accountable for maintaining that standard.

  • Ensure the team is completing all tasks as assigned on time and up to expected standards.

TAPROOM LOGISTICS

The Taproom Manager is ultimately responsible for ensuring that the bartending and off-site events teams have everything they need to be successful. Supplies and inventory need to be stocked, cash needs to be managed, things that are broken need to be fixed or replaced, and problems related to daily operation need to be solved.

At our Downtown Durham taproom, we have a delightful Lead Bartender who supports that Taproom Manager in accomplishing these tasks. The Taproom Manager is expected to work together with (and supervise) the Lead Bartender to ensure the success of the team.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Age: 21 or older

  • A minimum of 2 year years bartending/waiting tables is a firm requirement.

  • Proven ability to work in a fast-paced environment

  • Proven ability to juggle many priorities, to self-motivate, and to prioritize many initiatives and keep them moving forward

  • Excellent leader and communicator, with the ability to delegate tasks and relay information effectively

  • Positive outlook on life and ability to build a good vibe, even in stressful situations

  • Flexible schedule (some evenings, some weekends, and some holidays required)

  • Ability to lift 60 pounds unassisted and stand for extended periods of time

  • Ability to move 160-pound kegs with the assistance of a teammate and/or hand truck

  • Ability to work independently as well as a member of a team

  • Pass background check, including no alcohol-related convictions in the last 5 years. (Please let us know if you anticipate things popping up that you’d like to give us context to better understand. We’re reasonable people who believe in second chances.)

  • Valid driver's license or other means of reliable transportation to work

SCHEDULE:

  • To be successful in this role, it is likely that a Taproom Manager will work 40-45 hours/week and will spend a substantial amount of that time physically in the taproom.

  • The Taproom Manager spends a good portion of their work time between the hours of 10 and 7 on weekdays. However, it is not required that they work all of that time, and it IS necessary for them to have a general presence during nights and weekends, even if they aren't there every night or every weekend. The schedule is somewhat flexible.

  • The Taproom Manager IS required to be in attendance to help run all of 2-3 large annual events at the Downtown taproom and occasional additional events where a manager is needed throughout the year.

EMPLOYEE BENEFITS:

We believe one piece of building joyful community is creating happiness. We want every person who walks through our doors to walk out a little bit happier than they came in.
